Chemistry - Sem 1 | MU

How to pass in Chemistry-I ?

Before you directly start exploring study resources of mechanics and guidelines it is really very important to note down this important statements.
  • Switch to popular references, means if you where using class notes or other books other than the list of books provided by Mumbai university then you have to switch or add this references to your existing source of learning.
  • Follow the guidelines perfectly and the list of questions / concept / summary provided by team brainheaters.
  • Here Water is the most important and highest weighted chapter, do it first.
  • You are all set now ! Let's Go

Follow the order of preparation.
  1. Observe the Blueprints and choose what you gonna select for your studies. (Blueprints may not repeated exactly same but number of question from each modules remains same)
  2. Read and understand the Bh.plan for your preparation (Modules with high scores and priority should be your 1st priority)
  3. Start exploring the preparation kit and understand the contents of topics/modules you will start with !
  4. Open up points to be noted and start practicing or reading and understanding (From reference books) sums of the selected topics make sure you keep refer points to be noted section while you are practicing sums.
Blueprints

Expected Blueprints - Specially for Semester papers

Blueprints may not reflected same to same - There can be swap of questions or sub questions nothing else. Observe and select your set of questions to prepare.

  7. Explain Zeolite or Permutit process
  8. Distinguish between BOD and COD
  9. Explain the reverse osmosis process.
  10. Short note on: Ion-Exchange process / Demineralization process.

Always remember molecular weight of all the elements.

Remember the list of all multiplying factors.
The Three Types of Numerical Problems

  • Determine temporary and permanent hardness using (M/F) list.
  • Determine temporary and permanent hardness using EDTA method.
  • Determine temporary and permanent hardness using lime soda process.
    Chapter 2 - Polymers
    1. Explain Plastics and its classifications (Thermo and Thermosetting)

    2. Explain in detail degree of freedom
    3. One component system (Water)
    4. What is reduced or condensed phase rule.
    5. Applications and limitations of phase rule.
    CHAPTER 4 - lubricants

    1. Explain lubricants and lubrication
    2. Explain fluid film or thick film or Hydrodynamic lubrication
    3. What is Thin film or Boundary lubrication.
    4. Explain Extreme pressure lubrication
    5. Classification of lubricants
    6. Explain solid, liquid  and semi-solid lubricants
    7. Short note on: Blended oils
    8. Explain: Viscosity, Viscosity Index, Flash and firepoint, Cloud and pour point.
    9. Explain Saponification value and acid value.
    Numerical Problem (Lubricants)
    • The problems are based on Saponification value and Acid value.
    other important questions
    • What do you mean by carbon nanotubes ? Explain different types of carbon nanotubes.
    • Write CVD method for the preparation of carbon nanotubes
    • Define Phase, Component and degree of freedom
    • Short note on Visco elastic state.
    Remember these points

    Few points to be noted.

    1. Remember the molecular weights.
    2. Formula for hardness of water (All 3 types)
    3. Water - Theory and Numerical if done cleanly it can fetch 15-20 Marks.
    4. Polymers - Theory questions can fetch 10-15 marks easily.

Thus, Water and Polymers will help you easily clear the paper. 25-30 Marks i.e major parts of papers are ruled by these two chapters.
